Most companies will sell you some sort of program spread over 1-3 years, and courier the materials in pieces as you get to the end of each exam. Sounds reasonable? Well consider these facts:

What if you don’t finish every section? And what if the order provided doesn’t meet your requirements? Through no fault of your own, you may go a little slower and not receive all the modules you’ve paid for.

To be straight, the best option is to have a copy of their prescribed order of study, but get all the study materials at the start. It’s then all yours in the event you don’t complete everything at their required pace.

A study programme has to build towards a properly recognised qualification at the finale – definitely not some ‘in-house’ plaque for your wall.

If your certification doesn’t come from a company like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA, then chances are it could have been a waste of time and effort – because no-one will recognise it.

The classroom style of learning we remember from school, involving piles of reference textbooks, is an up-hill struggle for the majority of us. If this sounds like you, look for learning programmes that are on-screen and interactive.

If we can get all of our senses involved in our learning, then the results are usually dramatically better.

Locate a program where you’re provided with an array of CD or DVD ROM’s – you’ll learn by watching video tutorials and demonstrations, and be able to use virtual lab’s to practice your new skills.

It makes sense to see a small selection of training examples before you make your decision. Always insist on videoed instructor demonstrations and interactive modules with audio-visual elements.

Select CD and DVD ROM based physical training media where possible. This then avoids all the potential pitfalls with broadband outages, failure and signal quality issues etc.

Don’t accept anything less than the current Microsoft (or Cisco, CompTIA etc.) accredited exam simulation and preparation packages.

Make sure that the exams you practice are not just posing the correct questions on the correct subjects, but also asking them in the same way that the proper exam will formulate them. It can really throw some students if the phraseology and format is completely different.

Why don’t you verify how much you know by doing tests and practice exams prior to taking the actual exam.
